Implants are surgical grade titanium posts that are surgically placed beneath your gums to replace the roots of teeth that have been extracted in the past. After placement, the implants fuse to the bone and act as artificial tooth roots. Replacement teeth – that can be either removable or non-removable – are then attached to the implants.
One key benefit of implants is that they become part of your jaw, offering stable support to either fixed or removable teeth. Dentures, bridges, or individual teeth mounted to the implants won’t slip or shift in your mouth. You will enjoy better nutrition and improved speech as a result of your new dental implants.
The secure fit of implant-supported crowns and bridges feels much more natural than conventional dentures or partial dentures. In addition, you will also find the stability of implant-supported dentures more comfortable than removable dentures.
While high-tech in nature, dental implants are actually more tooth-saving than traditional bridgework since implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support.
As part of a thorough evaluation Dr. Najafi will check the condition of your mouth, the supporting bone in your jaws and the way your upper and lower teeth fit together. She may gather additional information by taking dental X-rays or making models of your teeth. This information will help determine whether you are a good candidate for dental implants.
Invisalign is the invisible way to straighten your teeth without braces. Invisalign uses a series of clear, nearly undetectable, removable aligners to straighten your teeth without metal wires or brackets. It has been proven effective in clinical research and in orthodontic practices nationwide.
You wear each set of aligners for about 2 weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move – little by little, week by week – until they have straightened to the final position your doctor has prescribed.
You’ll visit Dr. Mazlomi about once every 6 weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time average varies with severity of the case, can be as little as 6 months up to 24 months or more.
Invisalign also allows you to view your own virtual treatment plan when you start, so you can see how your straight teeth will look when your treatment is complete!
Invisalign can help you get the great smile you have always wanted because Invisalign is:
1. Invisible, so no one can tell you’re straightening your teeth. Now you can smile proudly during treatment as well as after.
2. Removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment. In addition, it makes brushing and flossing a cinch!
3. Comfortable, because it has no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment. And no metal and wires usually means you spend less time in your doctor’s office getting adjustments.
A dental bridge is a restoration used to fill the space where a tooth is missing. A typical dental bridge consists of a pontic (a filler tooth) that is attached to two surrounding teeth by crowns (abutments). Once complete, this bridge structure is bonded or cemented into the teeth.
Without the use of a bridge, spaces in the mouth from missing teeth can cause multiple teeth to shift, lead to malocclusion (bad bite) and/or jaw problems.
In recent years, however, dental bridges are not the first choice for replacing one or multiple missing teeth. A dental implant is a more predictable, less invasive, and a more healthy option. If you have one or more missing teeth come in for a complimentary visit to discuss the best option for you.
When a tooth is cracked, decayed, or damaged, a dental crown may need to be fitted onto the tooth. A dental crown is a permanent covering that fits over the original tooth. Porcelain crowns typically have the most realistic appearance and new advances in materials give us option of making beautiful, strong, long lasting, porcelain crowns.
A crown is a type of dental restoration, which completely caps or encircles a tooth or dental implant. Crowns are often needed when a large cavity threatens the ongoing health of a tooth. They are typically bonded to the tooth using dental cement. Crowns can be made from many materials, which are usually fabricated using indirect methods. Crowns are often used to improve the strength or appearance of teeth. While inarguably beneficial to dental health, the procedure and materials can be relatively expensive.
The most common method of crowning a tooth involves using a dental impression of a prepared tooth by a dentist to fabricate the crown outside of the mouth. The crown can then be inserted at a subsequent dental appointment.
Using this indirect method of tooth restoration needs the use of strong restorative materials that use time-consuming fabrication methods requiring intense heat, such as casting metal or firing porcelain. These are impossible to complete inside the mouth. Because of the expansion properties, the relatively similar material costs, and the aesthetic benefits, many patients choose to have the crown fabricated with gold.
As new technology and materials science has evolved, computers are increasingly becoming a part of crown and bridge fabrication, such as in CAD/CAM Dentistry.
Dental veneers (sometimes called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates) are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored material designed to cover the front surface of teeth. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their color, shape, size or length and resulting in a greatly improved appearance.
Dental veneers can be made from porcelain or from resin composite materials. Porcelain veneers resist stains better than resin veneers and better mimic the light reflecting properties of natural teeth. Resin veneers are sometimes thinner and may require removal of less of the tooth surface before placement, but every case is different. We will be happy to discuss the best choice of veneer material for you.
Root canal therapy often takes two or more appointments to complete. A temporary filling or crown is placed to protect the tooth between appointments. After each appointment when anesthetic has been used, your lips, teeth, and tongue may be numb for several hours after the appointment. Avoid any chewing until the numbness has completely worn off.
Between appointments, it is common (and not a problem) for a small portion of your temporary filling to wear away or break off. If the entire filling falls out, or if a temporary crown comes off, call us so it can be replaced.
It’s normal to experience some discomfort for several days after a root canal appointment, especially when chewing. To control discomfort, take pain medication as recommended. To further reduce pain and swelling. Rinse three times a day with warm salt water (a tsp. of salt in a cup of warm water, rinse-swish-spit).
If antibiotics are prescribed, continue to take them as prescribed, even if all symptoms and signs of infection are gone.
To protect the tooth and help keep you temporary in place, avoid eating sticky foods (especially gum), and hard foods, and if possible, chew only on the opposite side of your mouth. It’s important to continue to brush and floss normally.
Usually, the last step after root canal treatment is the placement of a crown on the tooth. A crown covers and protects the tooth from breaking in the future. If your bite feels uneven, if you have persistent swelling or pain, or if you have any other questions or concerns, please call our office.
Stained, yellowed and darkened teeth can be whitened by different techniques. The in-office (one hour) teeth whitening is the preferred method for several reasons. First it is done in approximately one hour. Second, the dentist can monitor the results and decide if more or less cycles of treatment are needed. Also the dentist can be determine if further home treatment is needed to enhance the results.
The “home” techniques involves making trays which fit into the mouth and these are then filled with appropriate concentrations of bleaching materials. When worn for a few hours daily, noticeable results are seen generally within a few days to a couple weeks.
Results vary from individual to individual and we will be happy to help you decide which method works best for you. Some of the factors involved include the intensity of the stains, whether or not you have fillings or crowns on your front teeth as well as what may have caused the stains.
When you need a small filling but don’t want ugly silver in your teeth, direct resin or white fillings are the way to go. Their most obvious advantage is beauty – a well-done white filling can be indistinguishable from the natural tooth. They have many advantages. White fillings can change the appearance of teeth, strengthen teeth, and more conservatively treat teeth – all things that silver fillings cannot do
White fillings are bonded to tooth structure – this means that they actually integrate with the tooth, thereby sealing the gap between tooth and filling and adding their strength to the tooth. This allows for the more varied uses of resin beyond just regular fillings – like placing thin layers over front teeth to change their color, shape or general appearance; or repairing small chips or fractures in teeth; or even being placed in the grooves of teeth to prevent decay from ever occurring. Bonded white fillings are an extremely beautiful advance in the creation of fantastic and healthy smiles.
